The Gut-Skin Connection: What’s Really Causing Your Breakouts?
By Taylor Robinson – Holistic Health & Wellness Nurse | Nutrition Specialist
Breakouts can feel personal. Painful. Sometimes even defeating especially when you’ve done everything “right.” The expensive skincare, the clean makeup, the supplements. Yet your skin still feels inflamed, unpredictable, or like it’s screaming for help. If that sounds like you, please know this: it’s not your fault, and you’re not alone.
Our skin is a mirror of what’s happening within, and more often than not, the root of chronic acne isn’t just hormonal, it’s deeply connected to gut health, inflammation, and the body’s detox pathways.
Let’s gently walk through what might really be going on beneath the surface and how to begin healing your skin from the inside out. No shame. No quick fixes.
Root Causes of Adult Acne Beyond the Skin Surface
When I work with women navigating stubborn breakouts, my first question isn’t “What’s your skincare routine?” it’s “What’s going on in your gut, your cycle, your stress levels?”
Here are some of the most common root causes of skin flares I see in clinic and with my clients:
Gut Dysbiosis
An imbalanced gut microbiome too much bad bacteria, not enough good can trigger systemic inflammation, poor nutrient absorption (especially zinc, vitamin A, and omega-3s, which your skin loves), and immune flare-ups that show up as acne, redness, or rashes. If your gut feels off bloating, gas, constipation, or loose stools your skin is likely feeling it, too.
Sluggish Detoxification
Our liver, lymph, kidneys, and colon are beautifully designed to filter and eliminate waste, but when these systems are overburdened due to stress, processed foods, medications, or poor digestion the skin often becomes a backup detox organ. Think: congestion, inflammation, and cystic breakouts that just won’t budge.
Hormonal Imbalances & PCOS
Hormones are powerful messengers. When they’re out of sync especially with conditions like PCOS, hypothyroidism, or adrenal dysregulation our skin often tells us. High androgens (like testosterone) can increase oil production and lead to painful jawline breakouts, particularly before your period or during ovulation. Even low thyroid function, as seen in Hashimoto’s, can affect skin turnover and detoxification, leading to dullness, dryness, and breakouts.
Food Sensitivities (Common Culprits: Gluten & Dairy)
For many women, certain foods act as inflammatory triggers. Dairy can spike IGF-1 (a hormone that stimulates oil production), while gluten may increase intestinal permeability (aka “leaky gut”), setting off a cascade of immune reactions. Not everyone needs to go gluten- or dairy-free forever but a mindful trial often brings big relief.
Blood Sugar Imbalances
Frequent spikes and crashes in blood sugar often from refined carbs, lack of protein, or skipping meals can worsen acne by driving up insulin and androgens. This leads to more oil production and clogged pores. Balanced blood sugar = calmer skin. It’s truly one of the most underrated acne-healing tools.
If you're curious about how I personally prioritize protein and reduce refined sugar to support clear skin, I’ve shared recipes and tips on my Instagram here.
Heal Your Gut, Calm Your Skin
You can’t out-cleanser an inflamed gut. But when we begin to soothe and support it, magic unfolds.
Here’s where I start with clients who are ready to heal gently but effectively:
Nourish with Anti-Inflammatory, Gut-Loving Foods
Whole foods are your allies. Think colourful, fibre-rich, deeply nourishing meals.
Leafy greens, wild blueberries, avocado, and turmeric calm inflammation and support the liver’s natural detox pathways. These foods help reduce the inflammatory signals that can aggravate skin and gut alike.
Bone broth, chia seeds, flax, and fermented foods (like coconut kefir or sauerkraut) feed good bacteria and help heal the gut lining. A healthy gut lining is essential to prevent “leaky gut,” which can worsen systemic inflammation and skin flare-ups.
Cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, arugula) support estrogen metabolism and detoxification, helping your body clear excess hormones that often contribute to adult acne.
Prioritize protein at every meal to support blood sugar balance and hormonal balance. Two essential pieces for acne healing. Stable blood sugar also helps reduce insulin spikes that can worsen breakouts.
Incorporating soothing herbs like ginger and chamomile in teas can also ease gut inflammation and support digestion gently throughout the day.
Reduce Triggers Without Deprivation
This isn’t about cutting everything out, it’s about noticing how your body responds with kindness and curiosity.
Try going gluten- and dairy-free for 3-4 weeks with nourishing swaps like almond milk, coconut yogurt, cassava tortillas, or chickpea pasta. Observe how your skin and digestion respond to these changes, and remember it’s okay to take it slow.
Limit refined sugar, processed oils, and alcohol. These common inflammatory culprits can disrupt gut balance and spike blood sugar, feeding skin inflammation.
Keeping a simple food and symptom journal during this trial can be incredibly empowering. It helps you connect your choices with how your skin feels, supporting long-term healing.
Support Daily Detox Pathways
Your body is always working to detoxify, let’s support it lovingly and effectively with simple, consistent habits that respect your natural rhythm.
Start your day with gentle rituals like warm lemon water, a splash of chlorophyll, or dandelion tea to support liver and lymphatic flow. These help wake up digestion and stimulate natural cleansing processes.
Move your body daily this doesn’t need to be intense. A walk in the sunshine, a few yoga stretches, or a sauna session can improve circulation and lymph drainage, both crucial for removing toxins from the body.
Ensure regular bowel movements. This is one of the most important yet often overlooked ways your body eliminates toxins. When stool lingers too long in the colon, toxins can be reabsorbed into your bloodstream, increasing systemic inflammation and aggravating skin conditions like acne.
I created a digital recipe book designed specifically for acne-prone, inflamed skin. It’s filled with acne- and gut-friendly recipes that balance blood sugar, support digestion, and reduce inflammation from the inside out. If you’re ready to nourish your skin and body, check out my Nourish Recipe eBook.
One of my favourite gentle supports for bowel regulation is Magnesium Citrate Powder. Magnesium helps relax the muscles of the digestive tract, encouraging smooth, comfortable elimination without harshness or cramping.
By supporting regular bowel movements, magnesium citrate helps to:
Clear waste efficiently, reducing the toxin burden your liver and skin must handle.
Balance hydration levels in the gut, preventing constipation or sluggish digestion.
Promote a healthy environment for beneficial gut bacteria, which are key to immune balance and inflammation control.
Calm the nervous system, magnesium’s relaxing effects indirectly support gut motility and reduce stress-related digestive upset.
When your detox pathways flow well, your skin reflects that care, fewer breakouts, less redness, and a calmer, clearer complexion. Detox isn’t about harsh cleanses or deprivation. It’s about nourishing your body with simple, consistent habits that honour its natural wisdom.
Supplement Support: Deep Nourishment for Skin & Gut
Your body isn’t broken. It’s just overwhelmed. Let’s slow things down and return to what’s foundational.
Sometimes, food alone isn’t enough to fully calm your gut and skin. These supplements are powerful allies I recommend from Designs for Health, carefully selected to soothe inflammation, rebalance your gut microbiome, support detox, and balance hormones, all key to clearer skin.

Skincare from the Inside Out
I love beautiful, clean skincare, but it should be supportive, not stressful. The goal is to nurture the skin’s barrier, reduce inflammation, and avoid products that do more harm than good.
Simple, Gentle, and Healing
Choose non-comedogenic oils like jojoba or squalane that hydrate without clogging.
Look for active ingredients like zinc, niacinamide, and azelaic acid they’re calming, supportive, and ideal for sensitive or acne-prone skin.
Avoid overly harsh acids or drying treatments that strip the skin’s microbiome.
To truly support your skin’s healing journey, I recommend some of my favourite acne-friendly products from Raw Canvas that work gently yet effectively:
Active Serum — a potent blend that targets inflammation and helps calm breakouts.
Pro-Health Serum — supports skin resilience and balances oil production.
Complexion Clarifying Serum — clears congested skin without irritation.
Acne Prevention Treatment Kit — a complete set designed to gently reduce breakouts and support skin healing.
And don’t underestimate the power of nervous system support. Stress directly impacts your skin via cortisol, inflammation, and gut permeability.
If no one’s told you this lately: your breakouts are not a reflection of your worth. Your body is speaking and you are learning to listen. Acne healing is a journey of reconnection. It’s about reclaiming your body as an ally, not a battle. With each nourishing meal, each breath of calm, each moment of grace, you’re already healing.
Take it one gentle step at a time. I’m right here beside you.
